Amazon Nears Deal to Acquire Globalstar for Satellite Play
April 16, 2026
Read Original: BloombergBloomberg reported on April 14 that Amazon is nearing an agreement to acquire Globalstar, a satellite operator with an existing fleet and global licensing. The deal would accelerate Amazon's push into satellite connectivity, which it has been pursuing through its Kuiper broadband constellation project. Globalstar is also notable for providing the satellite communication layer behind Apple's SOS features on iPhone, giving it an existing relationship with the world's largest consumer device maker.
The strategic logic for Amazon is clear. Satellite networks are no longer niche infrastructure for remote areas. They now touch smartphones, enterprise logistics, defense-adjacent communications, and cloud backhaul. As Amazon pushes deeper into physical delivery, smart home devices, and AWS edge computing, owning satellite capacity gives it direct control over connectivity across contexts where terrestrial networks do not reach.
The competitive target is obvious. SpaceX's Starlink has built a strong lead in satellite internet with its low-earth orbit constellation. Amazon's Kuiper project has been developing its own LEO constellation, but an acquisition of Globalstar would give Amazon licensed spectrum, existing ground infrastructure, and customer relationships faster than organic development alone.
For African markets, satellite connectivity has become increasingly relevant. Starlink's expansion across Nigeria and the continent has changed the connectivity conversation in underserved areas. More competition in satellite services is good for access, pricing, and reliability for users in markets where terrestrial broadband remains inconsistent.
The satellite market is becoming a core technology battleground, with direct implications for connectivity access everywhere.
